Souterrains

At Killeen East we found a number of souterrains inside a rath (ringfort).

Souterrains are underground stone-lined passages dating from the early medieval period. They were used as places of refuge during attacks and raiding (cattle raiding was very common in the period). They were also used as medieval fridges to store milk and cheese; as cool dark spaces they worked well to preserve foods that would go off quicker above ground.
